3D Carving with a Laser
Can a laser really relief carve in
3D? Of course! Not only is a laser
effective at engraving black and
white images, it also does an
excellent job in handling grayscale
as well. There is, however, a
considerable amount of preparation
needed for the artwork, and not all
artwork is well suited for 3D
carving.
The best material for 3D carving is
wood, preferably a piece that is
clear of any imperfections. Some
acrylics also work well, particularly
cast clear pieces.
3D carved images take longer to
make than standard engravings so
they tend to be a little more
expensive, but the results are truly
eye popping!
Assembled here is a collection of finished projects, created using both retail items and/or raw
materials, to help you get a better idea of the types of projects we’ve worked on.
By retail items, we mean personalizing consumer products such as cell phones, iPods and
laptops with technical tattoos, or tech tatts. Each can be customized with slick graphics and
text.
Photo engraving is another way consumers like to create memory keepsakes. This is usually
done on marble or wood, and even anodized aluminum with excellent results.
Awards and signs are also in high demand. These can use any combination of wood, acrylic or
crystal products. All can be engraved, and most can be cut.
Please have a look at all the subcategories and enjoy the galleries.
Project Samples
Here is a small sampling of the various projects we’ve worked on.
The first project is a wolf engraved on anodized aluminum, a
medium ideally suited for high resolution engravings. Next is a
Nokia cell phone decorated with a couple of tech tatts. The
patterns seen here are two of 300 available from our art catalog.
The pendants in the next photo were both engraved and vector
cut from 1/8” alder. The final project shows an architectural model
cut from 1/8” Baltic birch plywood and engraved with planking and
brickwork detail.
